A couple of years ago, I was telling a senior colleague about my work with gymnasts and competitive cheerleaders, and I was told
You know, it’s really difficult to get a gymnast over the fear of a back flip.” I later realized that until that moment, I thought it was easy!
While I was not trained specifically as a sports psychologist, my background, skills, and innate drive to be the best at my game make me well suited for this work. I have also noticed that while I am not gifted in the fine arts, I am highly creative and my creativity comes out through my therapeutic work and problem solving approach.
As a seasoned clinician with nearly two decades of clinical experience in a variety of mental health settings, I am prepared to help you identify and work through whatever is blocking you. I have experience in treating a wide range of problems, from performance enhancement with athletes to persons suffering from trauma (PTSD), to relational issues. As a therapist, my goal is to help my clients achieve their goals. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Hope College, I received my Master’s degree in Social Work from Rutgers University. I studied in the Middle East as an undergraduate, and I appreciate and value diversity. I enjoy working with clients of all ages, including children and teens. I consider the trust my clients place in me as a sacred gift.
What is a block?
A block is the obstacle that stops us from being how or who we want to be. It can manifest itself in our perceptions, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. A block gets between you and your creative process; it takes you outside of your flow. You are blocked when you know and feel that you just aren’t performing your best. A block may show up in your professional life, relational/family life, creative endeavors, or recreational life. There is a new kind of psychotherapy that helps identify the block, locate it, focus on it, process and release it. See “How I Work” for more information.
